He's Under the Age of Criminal Responsibility, What Can We Do?" A Jeonju Middle School Neglects Violent Student

A middle school in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, has been accused of neglecting a student who consistently engages in school violence, such as taking money from peers and forcing them to undress.

On the 3rd, the Jeonbuk Education Autonomy Civic Coalition issued a statement saying, “We can no longer turn a blind eye to the violent incidents occurring at a certain middle school in Jeonju.” According to the education sector, first-year student A at S Middle School frequently commits acts of violence, such as hitting classmates with slippers. Even physically larger students are intimidated by A, who calls older students from outside the school to threaten them.

However, S Middle School, which is supposed to address these issues, is reportedly doing nothing. The school's only response has been to advise the victims to avoid A. An education official commented, “S Middle School is located in an area with a strong emphasis on education, so the school seems reluctant to let such disgraceful incidents become public.”

The Jeonbuk Education Autonomy Civic Coalition pointed out, “Despite the increasing severity of A’s violent behavior, S Middle School is unwilling to get involved, citing mandatory education and the fact that A is a minor under the law. Parents are also afraid to report the incidents for fear of further harm to their children.” They criticized the school for not taking proactive measures to prevent greater harm.

The coalition emphasized, “For first-year middle school students, A’s violent behavior is extremely distressing. The number of victims is increasing while the school does nothing. The North Jeolla Office of Education and other educational authorities must actively investigate A’s school violence to prevent further victims. Please create a safe and peaceful school environment.”

The Kukmin Ilbo made several attempts to contact S Middle School for their stance but received no response. The North Jeolla Office of Education told the Kukmin Ilbo, “We plan to provide consulting on future life guidance and handling of school violence incidents for S Middle School, as well as intensive training for teachers on dealing with such matters and thorough preventive education for students. We will inspect the actual situation of school violence and help ensure the victims regain stability.” 먹튀검증
